Grief and Bereavement Strategic Framework

Strengthening Grief and Bereavement Care in British Columbia

A shared pathway to stronger communities and more connected care

Grief touches every community in British Columbia. Hospice societies provide compassionate support to people and families through serious illness, caregiving, death and bereavement. BCHPCA is working with hospice societies to develop a provincial framework that recognizes this work, identifies gaps in access, and strengthens connections between community supports and the health system.

Our vision

Support that is connected and close to home

We envision a British Columbia where people can find compassionate, appropriate grief and bereavement support in their community, or a clear pathway to support when the care they need is not available locally. This means building on the strengths of locally governed hospice societies while improving connections with healthcare providers, mental health services and community partners.

Why this work matters

Grief is a natural human response to loss, and people need different kinds of support at different times. That may include information and connection, a trained volunteer or peer group, counselling, or specialized care.

Hospice societies already provide many of these supports across B.C. Yet access varies by community. Distance, local capacity, workforce and volunteer resources, uncertain funding, and gaps in referrals can make it difficult for people to find help when they need it. The framework is being developed to make this community-based work more visible and better connected.

Three directions for change

1. Recognize hospice societies

Include community governed hospice societies in provincial and regional planning, and strengthen pathways that connect people to local grief support.

2. Prioritize grief and bereavement support

Treat grief support as part of community wellbeing and continuity of care, with responses that reflect different needs, cultures and communities.

3. Invest in community-based care

Build the workforce, volunteer capacity, coordination and local programs needed to make support more accessible and sustainable.

The framework in development

BCHPCA is bringing together hospice society experience, available evidence and partner perspectives to shape a practical provincial approach. The work considers service access, referral pathways, equity, sustainable investment and ways to demonstrate progress without placing unnecessary reporting burdens on small organizations

We will share the framework and its companion resources here when they are ready for public release. In the meantime, you can learn more about BCHPCA’s projects and explore grief and bereavement resources.

Help shape stronger grief support

Hospice societies, healthcare partners, community organizations and people with lived experience all have a role in improving how we respond to grief and loss. BCHPCA will continue to share progress as this work develops.

The BC Hospice Palliative Care Association (BCHPCA) recognizes the traditional land of the First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples who have walked before us and minded the lands we now call home for time immemorial. Hospice Societies have been able to support, aid and care for many people on these same lands.

The BCHPCA Offices are located on the ancestral, traditional, and unceded lands of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and TsleilWaututh Nations.
